About The Authors

Left Dr. Dawn M. Snodgrass, Right Dr. Mary M. Bevevino

Drs. Dawn Snodgrass and Mary M. Bevevino have taught, advised and mentored hundreds of students in high school and college. Inside and outside of the classroom, they have helped students with advice and guidance to address roadblocks that school sometimes presents. They have made it a personal mission to go beyond the traditional college professor’s classroom to encourage their students toward successful completion of their degrees.

Their experiences have taught them that the successful college student is more than a participant in the classroom. The young man or woman who walks across the stage to receive a college degree at graduation has had the advantage of mentorship and family support, as well as the spiritual strength to excel.

A note from Dawn…
Thank you for considering The ABC’s of College Success. As a college professor, I have had wonderful opportunities to learn many things from my students, and much of what they’ve taught me is in the pages of this little book. The advice is what they’ve told me they wish they had known earlier. The stories are recollections of events that have really happened to them. The faith reminders are the anchors they tell me they need.
Writing this book has been a true labor of love – born of my faith in Christ and my concern for young people trying to live Godly lives in a fallen world. Serving in youth ministry often reminds me of the daily struggles young people have, but also how bolstered they are when they stay connected to their faith.

A note from Mary…
Our work with students has also taught us the value of a light, informal approach to suggestions that might help them adjust to college life. They have been more accepting of ‘gentle nudges’ to help them cope with the many trials that occur in their newly independent lives than advice given with a heavy-handed approach. That realization has fostered the conversational tone taken in The ABC’s of College Success. Knowing that the young person’s world is enhanced by all encounters, both good and bad, and that one’s family and spiritual growth aid the student’s success in college and beyond, we have emphasized crucial information on the opportunities and pitfalls of the college experience with spiritual reminders and touches of home.

So when packing the clothes and the snacks, the cell phone and the laptop for your entering freshman, consider what one of our recently graduated students said after reading The ABC’s… “Why didn’t you write this when I was heading off to college? I sure could have used it!”
